Ai! an interjection - as relational form.
Ai! is a Portuguese interjection and onomatopoeia used to express a wide range of human emotions and reactions such as complaint, pain, relief, surprise, excitement, disapproval and loss. It is also holophrastic, in as much as it consists of a complex idea expressed in a single sound.
Playing with the Ai! as a vocal source of limitation drives the body to search through exaggeration or theatricality towards forms of expressing its own possibilities. When the sound of Ai! takes control of the body, it becomes material, becomes in itself plastic, artificial and theatrical.
Ai! is a call for attention. It is a siren! It frames something that’s happening or is about to happen. The Ai! is like the punch line of a joke, the element that turns things upside down and permits us to find another logic of understanding. The Body that ejects the Ai! is a body affected by an external force (visible or invisible) that cannot be controlled.
In this research project Lilia Mestre and Marcos Simoes want to see if through the Ai! they can discover something else, something strange and yet known: an alien element introduced by a recognizable sound, the Ai! as a familiar tool to create the unfamiliar. Ai! can take on many forms, be many things and become many spaces.
In Ai! Mestre and Simoes develop a physical practice that brings a body charged with a strong sense of catastrophe to the fore. Mestre and Simoes want to observe a body affected by an outside force that gives the impression of being incapable of controlling this force — a body that exists in an illogical space, in paradoxes and incongruities.

Ai! is een Portugees tussenwerpsel en onomatopee die gebruikt wordt om een scala van gemoedstoestanden uit te drukken, gaande van een klacht of pijn, over opluchting of verbazing, tot afkeuring of verlies, enzovoort. Het fungeert ook holofrastisch: een complex idee geuit in één enkele klank.
Het spelen met de Ai! als een vocale bron van beperkingen, waardoor het lichaam naar overdrijving of theatraliteit zoekt om zijn grenzen af te tasten. Wanneer het geluid van Ai! het lichaam overneemt en materieel wordt, zelfs van plastic, iets artificieel en theatraal.
Ai! is een roep om aandacht. Een sirene! Het kadert iets dat gebeurt, of dat op het punt staat te gebeuren. Ai! is zoals de pointe in een grap, het gegeven dat de wereld op zijn kop zet, en dat ons toelaat om een alternatieve logica te ontdekken. Het lichaam dat Ai! verwerpt, is een lichaam onder invloed van een externe kracht (zichtbaar of onzichtbaar) die men niet kan controleren.
In dit onderzoeksproject willen Lilia Mestre en Marcos Simoës testen hoe via dit Ai! zij iets anders, iets vreemd en nog niet gekend kunnen introduceren. Een vreemd element, geïntroduceerd door een herkenbaar geluid. Ai! als een herkenbaar element om het ongekende op te roepen. Ai! kan vele vormen aannemen, het kan vele dingen zijn, en vele soorten ruimtes worden. Ai! als het enige element van waaruit betekenis en expressie opgebouwd wordt.
Mestre en Simoës ontwikkelen met Ai! een lichaamspraktijk die een lichaam met een sterke neus voor het catastrofale oproept. Mestre en Simoës willen een lichaam observeren dat bepaald wordt door externe krachten, krachten die het niet lijkt te controleren. Een lichaam dat de indruk heeft te bestaan in een niet logische ruimte, in paradoxen en ongerijmdheden.
